This is a novel written in the realist mode, some of the best characterizations in the English language, it became Trollope's personal favourite. A major theme of Orley Farm is the question of individual judgement versus group judgement.

The Landleaguers were Irish farmers who resisted eviction sometimes through death threats and field flooding. They also practiced ostracism, or Boycotting, after the name of its first victim. 

Another great story from Trollope about a man and a woman getting married and the woman not telling her husband about a previous lover and the problems coming from it. 'Kept in the Dark' is a subtle study of a man's jealousy and indignation.

The book centers on the character of Mr. Harding, a clergyman of great personal integrity, whose charitable income far exceeds the purpose for which it was intended. Trollope explores and illuminates the universal complexities of human motivation and social morality.
